Former WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (23-3, 8 KOs) won an unpopular ten-round unanimous decision over Daniel “El Gallo” Gonzalez (17-2, 7 KOs).  Algieri and Gonzalez both fight under the Star Boxing banner and have sparred for years. Algieri won 98-92, 97-93, 96-94 and could get a world title fight soon against WBO champ Maurice Hooker.- Fightnews.com

Chris Algieri Holds Off Late Rally, Outpoints Danny Gonzalez
By Vladimir Lik

Chris Algieri (23-3, 8 KOs) defeated Daniel Gonzalez (17-2, 7 KOs) by unanimous decision on the Demetrius Andrade-Artur Akavov undercard at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The official scores from ringside were 98-92, 97-93, 96-94.

The scores seemed a bit wider than fans in attendance believed they should be and rained down boos when Algieri spoke to DAZN following the bout.

“A lot of the things that I have been working on, I didn’t pull the trigger on,” Algieri said immediately following the bout. “I am my biggest critic and this performance wasn’t my best. I got the win and I am moving on. I’ve got to take care of this eye which is a bummer. But honestly, I felt a little off today but it is what it is. You go back to the drawing board and look to come back better.”

In his second bout since being out of the ring for two years, the 34-year-old Algieri managed to do enough to stave off an upset-minded former sparring partner who came to Madison Square Garden to stop Algieri’s dreams of winning another world title. Working behind a crisp jab, Algieri kept Gonzalez guessing all night and off balance until a cut opened underneath Algieri’s left eye. Gonzalez used that as motivation attack but was unable to string together more than two punches at any given time to really hurt Algieri.

Algieri’s jab gained control of the opening round and controlled the pace to point where Gonzalez had to overextend to make any real contact. By the second round Gonzalez got a lot closer landing a few shots off of Algieri’s head causing a bit of swelling. Gonzalez had some good moments in the third round when he had Algieri by the ropes. Gonzalez tried to take advantage of Algieri leaning on the ropes but was just a step too slow to catch Algieri.

By the fourth round Algieri regained control of his movement again and kept Gonzalez at a good distance where Algieri could work behind his jab. The next few round went back and forth as both fighters tried to negate the other’s movement. Gonzalez had his best moments of the bout in the seventh and eighth rounds. After opening the cut under Algieri’s eye, Gonzalez tried to move in to do further damage but Gonzalez was incapable of cutting the ring off and Algieri used his legs to move in circles front and backwards avoiding Gonzalez.

Gonzalez made a last stand in the final round and had Algieri trapped for a few moments but again Algieri freed himself and evaded any meaningful shots from Gonzalez. Fans in attendance booed the scorecards as they were announced feeling the scores should have been closer.- BoxingScene.com

By Jeff Aranow: Former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (23-3, 8 KOs) struggled to defeat Danny Gonzalez (17-2-1, 7 KOs) by a closer than expected 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night on DAZN at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The results of the fight was not a popular one, as the crowd booed Algieri long and hard as he was being interviewed after the fight. Algieri, 34, was backing up the entire second half of the fight, and he didn’t look like the winner at the end. Algieri looked very upset at the end of the fight, knowing that he hadn’t performed the way he wanted to.

The judges scored it 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. Boxing News 24 scored it in Algieri’s favor by a 96-94. Algieri needed to finish strong, but he failed to do. He clearly lost the last four rounds from round 7 to 10.
Algieri suffered a cut under his left eye from a clash of heads in round 5. Algieri looked to avoid exchanges after the cut opened, and this emboldened the younger 29-year-old Gonzalez, who pressured him nonstop and punished him with shots.

It looked like Algieri was exhausted by the fifth round. His legs looked rubbery, and the power that he had shown in the first three rounds was gone. Algieri started to fade by the third round. He was losing power on his shots, and getting hit more and more.

“My performance wasn’t my best,” Algieri said after the fight in admitting that he failed to perform well. “I felt a little off. I got to take care of my eye. It wasn’t so much that I was tired. My eye was getting worse and worse. I think I can come back in a short period of time. I need a longer camp. I want a full eight week camp. As long as I can have a proper camp, I can turn it up when I need it.”
READ Algieri defeats Gonzalez in New York – RESULTS
With this victory, Algieri will need to be challenging WBO light welterweight champion Maurice Hooker. That’s going to be a very tough fight for Algieri if he doesn’t have more in the gas tank than what he showed tonight. Algieri isn’t going to be able to last long against Hooker if he gasses out after five rounds. It’s going to take some energy for Algieri to be able to wear Hooker down. Hooker is beatable, but requires a fighter with a good engine. Algieri looked like a six-round fighter tonight, not a 12 rounder. Algieri needs to improve his stamina for him to beat Hooker. -BoxingNews24

Danny Gonzalez VS Chris Algieri for WBO Intercontinental Title

dgwbo

“Gonzalez, a young and rising star who has made a name for himself at the Paramount in Huntington, LI, in Star Boxing’s Rockin’ Fights series, captured the ABO Intercontinental Championship in September 2018, with a unanimous decision over JOHNNY “HITMAN” HERNANDEZ in an epic battle. The fight was a war of attrition and Gonzalez earned his championship in a bout which proved both his fighting heart and talent. Now the spotlight is much greater as he challenges former World Champion Algieri for the WBO International Strap.

Not only is a possible world title shot on the line in this bout but bragging rights in the Star Boxing stable are being contested. This is a fight where both fighters will be calling on all their will and skill and it should be a crowd pleasing slam-bang affair from bell-to-bell.” – Boxing Insider

Danny Gonzalez is Ready for Chris Algieri!

On January 18th, Star Boxing’s Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez (17-1-1 7KO) of Woodhaven, NY; looks to seize the opportunity of making a splash in the hot Super-Lightweight division by taking on former world champion Chris Algieri (22-3 8KO). As part of a stellar card put forth by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions shown exclusively on DAZN, and taking place in the famed Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden; this cross-town rivalry is not just about title contention but bragging rights.

The up and coming Puerto Rican prospect Danny Gonzalez, is aiming to upset the apple cart in taking out former sparring partner Chris Algieri; who is in the comeback stage of his career at the age of 34. For the fighter known as “El Gallo”, the 28 year old sees the chance to prove his supporters right and doubters wrong “A win over Algieri will most definitely put me in the spotlight, and hopefully turn me from a prospect to a contender while showing my friends and family how dedicated i’ve been to the sport.” Promoter Joe Deguardia is known for turning local talents from ticket sellers to title holders, and pitting his two brightest stars against each other on such a big stage elevates the status of two fighters who know how to please a crowd.

While the focus on this matchup is whether or not Chris Algieri can return to former glory and higher pay days, Danny Gonzalez has dreamed of the chance to fight for a title since he first started training under the tutelage of head coach Moises Roman Jr. as an overweight teen looking to get in to shape over 10 years ago. Overlooked by general observers and his opponent alike, motivation is at an all time high “I’m self motivated, I only care about the opinions of my team… I believe in myself, I haven’t shown my full potential yet in the ring. I guarantee the best version of myself will show up January 18th, and I will shock the world .“

When asked on changes made for this camp Gonzalez had this to say: “The training is aggressive and focused like always but for this camp we brought in Felipe Gomez to sharpen up my movement and cutting off the ring, while focusing on my defense.” Taking place at 140lbs over 10 rounds, fitness is paramount when facing an opponent known to use up the whole ring, but a different approach was taken since the young fighter’s sole loss “I’m having fun and enjoying the training…i’m more open minded, setting a strategy for my opponent and not overworking myself while in camp.” Both men are known for their high levels of physical fitness as well as high punch outputs through their contrasting styles.

Having shared camps together and forming a friendship, “El Gallo” plans on putting their personal relationship on hold in pursuit of his goals; “The fans can expect an extremely entertaining fight from start to finish, I’m coming to bring an all out war as I see Chris as an obstacle in my way. I’m coming to break him down and show him he can’t compete with a hungrier, younger Rooster like me. He is no longer my idol, now he’s my rival and i will not be denied victory.” Crossroad fights tend to bring out the best in fighters, Danny Gonzalez wants to raise his status and leapfrog Chris Algieri in the rankings to place him as a front runner for a title shot, opportunity is knocking at his door.

Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez takes on Chris Algieri Jan 18th at Madison Square Garden

The sport of boxing is one that has a worldwide reach, however the community in boxing is small, and because of that there are times where a friend or mentor can be the roadblock to fame, money, glory, and a world title opportunity. Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing promotional company has built up a few fighters in the past few years that have transcended the realm of local fame and have made an impact on the world stage. Huntington Long Island’s Chris Algieri is still considered to be the star of Star Boxing; as the focus turned to the always hot junior welterweight division, it was Algieri who lead the charge as an undefeated 19-0 contender looking for a title shot. Defining his career by defeating “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov for the WBO title in 2014 at the Barclays Center, Algieri turned out a gutsy come from behind performance to win a split decision after suffering two first round knockdowns and a badly swollen eye. At the same time Queens, NY native Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez was earning his keep as a prospect to watch with a 7-0-1 record, but still without a promoter or the backing needed to springboard his career until he impressed Algieri with his high work rate and never give up attitude. The opportunity came knocking for the young Puerto Rican brawler, a slot against a fellow undefeated fighter named Ken Alvarez on the undercard of a televised ESPN Friday Night Fights card at The Paramount; Star Boxing’s headquarters for action and entertainment. The two fighters entertained the crowd for six rounds, Gonzalez cut by head butts was able to dominate Alvarez, dropping him in the fourth and sixth rounds to seal the deal and earn a unanimous decision; Star Boxing had a new prospect to groom in to a champion.

The success by Chris Algieri in his title shot against Provodnikov gave the New York boxing scene exactly what it needed, finally a cinderella story come true for an honest fighter who needed a breakout fight; and this lead to a big money fight against living legend Manny Pacquiao for the WBO Welterweight title in Macau, China. The fight itself wasn’t entirely successful for Algieri as he visited the canvas numerous times, but he was able to win at many points with his boxing ability and the grit needed to see the final bell after 12 hard rounds. Fighters like Danny Gonzalez saw this as inspirational who sought to pave out his own chance for a big opportunity, although his stablemate lost handedly; it was the heart shown that won many fans over. Parlaying the performance against Pacquiao in to other high profile fights, Algeri stood at 147 lbs and took on superstars Amir Khan and Errol Spence, losing a close decision to Khan and being stopped for the first time against the rising Spence in 5 rounds. Having only earned a decision against the tough Erick Bone in between his two losses, it seemed like the Huntington fighter had peaked and needed a break from competition in the squared circle.

During the two year hiatus by Chris Algieri, Star Boxing’s Cletus Seldin took the helm of top dog at 140 lbs for the company as Danny Gonzalez continued to build up wins going 5-0 at The Paramount. In 2017 “El Gallo’s” big chance came when a shot for the WBC International Silver Junior Welterweight title against Danny O’Connor took place at the Mohegan Sun, the winner would get a boost in the governing body’s ranking and potentially a title shot in the near future. Looking to redeem himself after a shocking knockout lost in 2015, O’Connor had nothing to lose as he faced off with the brooding Gonzalez. In what would be a war while it lasted, Gonzalez took the fight to his older opponent until a well placed counter punch knocked him down; although he rose before the count was over, referee Steve Willis deemed the young prospect unable to continue. Devastated to let victory slip from his hands, Gonzalez was knocked back down the ladder to prove himself worthy once again for a chance at stardom.

For Gonzalez, 2018 started with a bang, he strung together three significant wins, two by stoppage and a dominating effort against stablemate Johnny Hernandez as the main event of Rockin’ Fights 32 for the ABO Intercontinental title. On the other hand, Algieri was making a name for himself in boxing on the strength and conditioning as well as the nutritional aspect of the sport, helping middleweight Danny Jacobs earn a title while being part of his team; the question was: Is Algieri done as a fighter?. It would be only a soul searching and healing hiatus for Algieri who once again teamed up with promoter Joe DeGuardia to stage a comeback at The Paramount against rugged veteran Angel Hernandez. Returning to his old ways, the 34 year old Algieri returned to the 140 lb division successfully outpointing Hernandez while putting himself back in to title contention notching his 22nd victory.

The calls came, Algieri has plans for another comeback bout, and with a victory a chance for the WBO junior welterweight title he once held at nearby Nassau Coliseum if everything pans out. Danny Gonzalez on the other hand has been patiently waiting for a call from his promoter, staying in shape and looking for another chance to reach the goals he has worked so hard for…and it came. On January 18th 2019 at the world renowned Madison Square Garden, Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez (17-1-1 7 KO’s) will take on mentor, friend, and former sparring partner Chris Algieri (22-3 8 KO’s) for the chance to derail his plans and force himself in to the title mixup. The bout will be a fight for as long as it lasts, two men who have shared camps together, know each other well, and have unlimited tanks of stamina. The winner of this bout put himself right where they want to be on the boxing scene and for “El Gallo” his idol has become his rival, nothing stands in his way to greatness but victory over Algieri.

Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez Dominates… Crowned the new ABO Intercontinental Champion

d4

This past Friday as the main event of Star Boxing’s Rockin’ Fight 32, Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez upped his record to 17-1-1 with 7 KO’s when he scored a 10 round majority decision win over the tough and game Johnny “The Hitman” Hernandez, now 9-4; to win the ABO Intercontinental 140 lb title. While the score cards read 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92; there was no doubt that “El Gallo” did what he had to do to come out with a decisive victory, dragging Hernandez in to a tit for tat war while piling on the leather to secure the dominant victory over the stretch. It was a battle of attrition that Gonzalez made sure he would not lose, landing several hard right hands, stuffing a jab in to the face of Hernandez, and attacking the body at will while he pushed back his courageous foe. The crowd was constantly cheering for both warriors and it made for a classic night of boxing…now we look to stay busy and add some more belts to the collection of the Warrior Rooster!

On Friday night, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s Rockin’ Fights lived up to every bit of its expectation. Fans at The Paramount witnessed, knockouts, all out brawls, great boxing skills, and a main event for the ages.

The main event last night was a throwback to the glory days of boxing when neighborhood rivalries filled the venerable NY fight clubs as a sold-old crowd engrossed in the thrilling, tooth and nail war between DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ and JOHNNY “HITMAN” HERNANDEZ. The crowd was so loud that you could barley hear yourself think. The incredible back and forth action was amplified by the crowd’s alternating and competing shouts of “Johnny” and “Danny”.

Hernandez started the fight fast, boxing smartly in the first two rounds landing crisp combinations to the stalking Gonzalez. Gonzalez closed the distance in the third round and from that point on it became a war of attrition in a spectacular fight. Gonzalez finished a bit stronger as the ten-round epic battle came to a close with everyone standing and cheering. When the scores were read to a captivated crowd, the elated new ABO INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION, Danny Gonzalez fell to his knees at the center of the ring with his new title on his shoulder. Gonzalez improves to 17-1-1 (6 KO’s) while Hernandez drops to 9-4 (1 KO). The scores were 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92, for DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ (majority decision).”- BoxingNews24.com

DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ AND JOHNNY “THE HITMAN” HERNANDEZ TO BATTLE FOR THE ABO INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE AT ROCKIN’ FIGHTS, SEPTEMBER 21ST

Final-Main-Event-Header

NEW YORK, AUGUST 24, 2018

“Rockin’ Fights” 32 is poised to have The Paramount rocking when two of the Paramount’s own warriors fight for their chance at earning the ABO Intercontinental Title. On September 21st, DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ (Woodhaven, NY, 16-1-1 6KO’s) will look to make it a dominating ninth consecutive win at The Paramount, but will have his hands full against Huntington’s native son, JOHNNY “THE HITMAN” HERNANDEZ (Huntington, NY, 9-3 1KO). Hernandez is no stranger to The Paramount either, having fought at the venue ten times over his career. One guarantee is that boxing fans from across Long Island will be flooding in to get tickets to “Rockin’ Fights 32”.

Danny Gonzalez is coming off two dominating performances at The Paramount in both March and June. At “Rockin’ Fights 30”, Gonzalez stopped the very tough and durable veteran Juan Rodriguez in the 5th Round of an 8-round fight. Three months later at “Rockin’ Fights 31”, in his first main event at The Paramount, Danny unleashed the beast in front of a rowdy Long Island crowd, destroying tough veteran Justin Savi in the second round, after a vicious onslaught of power punches that ripped both the body and head of Savi. Danny has been in training camp with former world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, sparring regularly with the World Champ to take his abilities to new levels in preparation for this exciting main event on September 21st.

Danny had this to say about his training camp, and what fans can expect come September 21st, “I’m excited to be the main event at The Paramount again and I am most definitely ready to face the home town, Long Island native Johnny Hernandez. I know it’s going be a sold-out arena and we are both certainly coming to fight and bring action to The Paramount As always, I am so grateful for these amazing opportunities I have received and moreover I am appreciative of the continued support I receive daily from my management team, promotor, coaches and fans and I am ready to put on a great showing September 21st at The Paramount.”

Johnny Hernandez is coming off a terrific victory in his previous fight at “Rockin’ Fights 31” in June, against Juan Rodriguez. Johnny, is known as a ‘crowd-pleaser’ as he is always eager to trade with anyone at the center of the ring; a quality which earned him his nickname, “The Hitman”. However, in his last fight, Johnny showed an enhanced tactical offense, picking his spots to land shots to both the head and body of Rodriguez. The two battled through six-rounds, in a gritty, classic “Rockin’ Fights” match, that Johnny won via unanimous decision. Hernandez brings it every time he steps in the ring. The Paramount is a short walk from his house, literally in his backyard in Huntington, so a strong following of “Hitman” fans will be in attendance to propel Johnny, urging him on to come out victorious, with the ABO Championship in hand. This bout will be Johnny Hernandez’s first main event at The Paramount.

Johnny had this to say about his upcoming title bout, “A lion doesn’t have to prove that it’s a threat … you already know what the lion is capable of. This fight means everything to me, it can revive my career or end it so a lot is riding on this win”

JOE DEGUARIDA, CEO of Star Boxing, had this to say about the main event on September 21st, “This is what makes Boxing so special. Two local fighters, fighting in front of a packed arena of hometown fans. A win for either Danny or Johnny is a major step towards the ultimate goal of moving on for a world title chance, but both are winners for being able to compete in a fight like this. “Rockin’ Fights” always brings a great crowd, and on September 21st, the fans will get to see another truly special night.”

IN “ROCKIN’ FIGHTS” MAIN EVENT JUNE 8TH AT THE PARAMOUNT

ANTHONY KARPERIS UNABLE TO FIGHT AFTER SUFFERING
 HAND INJURY IN TRAINING

TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE: CLICK HERE

New York, May 30, 2018
JUNE 8TH at THE PARAMOUNT was set to be a battle for bragging rights between two Long Island sluggers in ANTHONY KARPERIS and DANNY GONZALEZ. However, unfortunately, Anthony Karperis suffered a hand injury while training, causing him to be unable to fight on June 8th.
With a vacant spot in the “Rockin’ Fights” main event, JUSTIN SAVI (31-16-2 21KO’s) answered the call to take on Queens fan favorite, DANNY GONZALEZ (15-1-1 6KO’s) on June 8th. This scheduled 10-round main event bout will be another exciting and evenly matched fan-friendly fight.
JUSTIN SAVI is a forty-nine fight veteran, looking to secure a win in his fiftieth professional bout at The Paramount on June 8th.  The super lightweight fights out of Silver Spring, Maryland by way of Cotonou, Benin.  Savi has fought for numerous titles during his career, earning the WBC Silver Featherweight title and the IBF Mediterranean Featherweight title.  During this span, Savi has also fought some of the most elite in boxing, including former WBC World Featherweight champion JHONNY GONZALEZ (66-10 54KO’S), former WBA World Super Bantamweight champion RICO RAMOS (29-5 14KO’S) and former IBO World Super Featherweight champion MALCOLM KLASSEN (33-8-2 17KO’S).
DANNY GONZALEZ is coming off of a big time, TKO win on the undercard of “Rockin’ Fights” 30 in March.  Gonzalez is undefeated at The Paramount and will look to make June 8th another tally in the win column. This will be Gonzalez’s first main event at The Paramount.  A win on June 8th against a veteran with the pedigree of Savi will continue to raise Gonzalez’s merit, and will turn eyes at the upper echelon of the boxing world.
Gonzalez had this to say about his opportunity,  “I love the Paramount. The energy, it’s not too far away from home.   I have hundreds of my friends there, my supporters, my family.  Everyone gets to come out.  I get to stay home and relax and take a ride out there.  Getting to that level, a 10-rounder main event against a good guy, it’s going to be an awesome night.”
Joe DeGuardia had this to say about the new main event, “It is always unfortunate when a fighter suffers an injury leading up to a big fight.  We wish Anthony Karperis the best and a quick recovery, as we look forward to his return.”  DeGuardia continued, “with Justin Savi stepping in to face Danny Gonzalez, the Long Island fans will not be disappointed.  Savi will bring great veteran experience and pose a great test for Danny Gonzalez, who looks to continue to grow his Long Island fan base, and take the next step forward in his career.  Fight night is just over a week away, so be sure to get your tickets now.”
